The impression that there is a trick to taking good
photographs need not be true - learning the
different elements that must be considered when
taking photos, makes this a most enjoyable hobby.
With just a little knowledge and some practice,
wonderful pictures are just a click away.
There is nothing more enjoyable than capturing
pictures of wonderful moments and images and
sharing them with others.
In order to pursue photography as a hobby it helps to
learn some of the techniques and skills associated with it.
Gather the different materials needed around you
and familiarise yourself with your subject.
Consider investing in either an automatic focus
camera, or a self-focusing SLR camera. Today's digital
cameras are much more advanced and can even make
a beginner look like a professional.
If you choose nature as a subject it is important to
consider the location of the pictures.
Making sure the sun will not affect the picture
in undesired ways, and positioning yourself with the
sun behind you to so the light will create clearer
shots is important.
If you are just starting out it helps to practice by
taking pictures around your own home and improve
your ability to take great pictures of unplanned or
unexpected moments, such as animals or children
going about their business during the day.
Use a tripod in order to achieve pictures that are steady.
This will help capture great images at the right angles.
Pay attention to the shape, position, and size of the
subject you photograph to help with composition.
In the absence of sunlight, artificial light may be
needed. If you use a flash on your camera ensure that
the light is sufficient to create a clear image.
Many photographers enjoy sharing their experience
with others, and don't mind answering questions.
Observe and appreciate the work other people do in
photography in order to build up an "image bank" in
your own mind and thereby create your own style.
The Southern Highlands Photographic Society meets
every Tuesday evening and interacting with other
photographers is always inspiring.
With some basic equipment, knowledge, and
practice photography can be a very enjoyable hobby.
It doesn't need to be expensive and almost everyone
can pursue it. Pictures can be developed at many local
stores, and shared with family members, friends, and other
people. Photography is an enjoyable art form that allows
people to express a great deal through even one picture.
The pictures you take can be displayed with pride.
Whether you are a novice or an experienced
professional, your interest in photography is all
that is needed to begin building up a portfolio of
your own pictures.
If you are interested in learning or passing on your
own knowledge or simply enjoy the process of
capturing an image and/or the creation of your own
vision, the Southern Highlands Photographic Society
would love to hear from you.
