Fun with 500
An afternoon spent playing cards with friends, having a good a laugh and forgetting
your troubles is what Dawn Livingstone of the Bowral 500 club recommends.
The group of around 20 members meets every Monday at St Judes in Bowral to pit skills
against each other at the age-old game of 500.
Although 500 is now the national card game of Australia, it was in fact invented in the
United States and copywritten there in 1904.
Called 500 because the first team or player to reach a total score of at least 500 points wins.
Many card players would have played Euchre, of which 500 is an extension.
Teams of four people can play 500, with teams being chosen by a draw so that everyone
gets to play and sit in different places each week.
"We are a friendly bunch of people who simply love to
play cards. It's such a social game and we have a lot of
fun," Dawn said.
The 500 club was started by a local lady two
Dawn said she has taken over the reins of this
informal gathering and she is responsible for
organising the weekly events.
Players pay $2 a head for the game and
$1 extra for tea or any other supplies.
"We hope everyone gets a
chance to win each time they play,
even if it's only a few games,"
Similar to bridge, it does help
if potential members can play
500 or at least arrive with some
