TACK LING The tough design issues is made
easier when all contributors to the nished
product work together. It is a philosophy
that is working well for Tina Tziallas of tina
tziallas|architecture studio in Bowral and
interior designer Linda Tyler of Biggie Best
Interior Design in Mittagong.
These two designing women are in the early
planning stages of a new Burradoo Home and
they have been working closely with both
the client and the builder to come up with a
contemporary house that comes in on style,
quality and budget.
"We are now are the stage of re ning the
design to establish a preliminary price from the
builder," Tina said.
"We have been looking at site speci c
restrictions such as access and privacy, as well
as thinking about landscape design and how
it will be structured to work in with the design
of the house.
"It is at a point where we need to consider
how the outside will work with the inside and
we need to start taking into consideration any
"Decisions such as whether we use
aluminium or timber windows and the choice
of bricks can impact on both the appearance
of the building and the budget."
Both Tina and Linda said the opportunity to
work on this project with the builder, Dennis
Perinich, at such an early stage was invaluable.
"It is great to be able to sit down with the
builder so that he too can be involved in the
vision for the project and make a contribution
regarding design ideas and associated costs,"
"It is about ensuring the architect, designer,
builder and client are all on the same page.
"The informal nature of discussions has also
made the client feel free and comfortable to
"The builder has even shown the client some
design ideas included in other projects so that
they can get a better idea of how things will
Tina said that one of the main challenges
faced by the designing team so far had
been the discovery of a covenant on the
property, which enforced only single storey
She said the original concept plan had
incorporated a double storey section.
"This initially sent the client into a spin, but by
working as a team we were able to overcome
the challenge," Tina said.
"We reassessed the plan, keeping in mind
what drove the design in the rst place.
"Our aim was to make any compromises to
the original concept without losing the central
idea of the house -- we worked in new ideas to
accommodate the covenant."
Both Tina and Linda conceded they were at
a stage where the interior design was starting
to take shape.
"Interior design ideas start to evolve at this
point where we are looking at the architectural
detail and considering materials and colours
for windows, doors, the roof and ooring,"
Linda said. n
