Names: Fiona and Bruce Robertson
When/How did you meet? 16 years ago at the P&O
Centre in Circular Quay, Sydney. Fiona had organised
a fundraising function for 1000 people. I noticed
Fiona's beautiful ankles and love swiftly followed.
Family? Daughter Elspeth, 9yrs old
Where have you moved from? Our rst country
experience as a family was at Taralga where we lived
for two years during which time we developed a
commercial cherry orchard. More recently, we moved
down from Sydney.
What are your backgrounds? Fiona was brought up
in Sydney and is an experienced function organiser
and chef - the perfect skills to assist guests to have a
great experience at Montrose. I spent my early years
in rural WA; my father being a commercial orchardist.
I have always had an interest in horticulture,
particularly the micro- ora, micro -fauna and health
of the soil. We apply that knowledge at Montrose
through composting, using seaweed based soil
conditioners and detailed soil analyses to ensure
optimum plant health. Our combined backgrounds
suits Montrose as I manage the horticultural aspects
of the estate and Fiona produces the tasty products
as well as manages the self contained cottage and
functions within the "barn".
Why the Southern Highlands? We just love the
beauty of the area and the four seasons. Not to
mention our desire to be part of a thriving rural
community o ering a wholesome lifestyle for our
family and the close proximity to both Sydney and
Canberra, where we have friends and family. It allows
us the best of all worlds.
What are you doing now? Five months ago we
bought Montrose House and Berry Farm at Sutton
Forest (c1861 heritage listed home). Since then we've
planted an additional 5000 berries (blueberries,
raspberries) and introduced cherries from the
Taralga orchard to complement the existing berries,
quinces and other fruit varieties that surround the
English gardens of the house. We've renovated the
self contained two bedroom guest cottage and are
currently renovating the barn which we will continue
to use as a venue for weddings, functions and cooking
What do you hope to achieve? To o er all guests an
elegant country experience on a working estate; to
produce a variety of good quality and tasty berries for
the Southern Highlands and to provide the ultimate
personalised country experience for those seeking a
venue for up to 120 guests.
What do you love most about your new lifestyle?
Being part of and actively involved in the community.
What do you miss about your previous life?
The corporate income! n
and Berry Farm
